The Data Scientist will improve and expand Rappel’s core decarbonization model (CO2-AIM) by designing, developing, and owning production-grade Python software. This role sits within the Software Engineering team and partners closely with the Carbon Analytics team to translate carbon and economic modeling requirements into scalable, testable services and data pipelines across a spectrum of customer data, greenhouse gas accounting, and decarbonization topics. You will lead technical design decisions for the CO2-AIM codebase, raise engineering standards (testing, CI/CD, code review), and maintain transparency and rigor in model outputs.

LOCATION

Pasadena or Oakland, CA

EMPLOYMENT TYPE

Full time (hybrid)

What You’ll Do

    - Own the technical implementation for the CO2-AIM modeling engine and supporting data pipelines, designed and prioritized by the Carbon Analytics team.

    - Lead the design and implementation of new modeling features (GHG accounting, decarbonization levers, scenario optimization) with clear assumptions, validation, and documentation.

    - Build and maintain production-quality Python services and libraries that power customer delivery and internal tooling.

    - Design and implement scaled data ingestion and transformation pipelines for customer and Rappel data; implement data quality checks, anomaly detection, gap-filling, and reproducible transformations.

    - Establish and model software engineering best practices for the CO2-AIM codebase, including automated testing, code review, observability, and versioned releases.

    - Drive improvements to robustness and transparency of results through audit trails, explainability tooling, and systematic debugging and validation workflows.

    - Collaborate closely with Analytics and Delivery to ensure customer delivery is seamless, outputs integrate cleanly into portals/dashboards, and timelines are met.

    - Mentor and unblock other engineers/analysts; review technical designs and pull requests; contribute to hiring and onboarding as the team grows.

Who You are

    - Bachelor’s degree in computer science, engineering, applied math, or related field; Master’s (or PhD) preferred.

    - 5+ years of experience spanning data science and/or software engineering, with a strong record of shipping production Python systems.

    - Direct experience in climate, sustainability, energy, and/or GHG accounting, or a demonstrated ability to ramp quickly and apply domain knowledge with rigor.

    - Proficiency in Python and SQL; strong software design skills (modular architecture, performance, testing, packaging).

    - Experience building and maintaining data pipelines and deploying workflows in the cloud (AWS, GCP, or Azure), including containerization (Docker).

    - Experience building and deploying APIs and working with modern data stores (PostgreSQL and/or data warehouses).

    - Practical experience applying ML/AI techniques (e.g., anomaly detection, clustering, forecasting) with disciplined evaluation and monitoring.

    - Demonstrated technical leadership: owning architecture and delivery, mentoring teammates, and effectively collaborating across multiple workstreams and stakeholders.
